This guide for flight instructors (CFIs) presents lesson plans in the form of scenario-based maneuver briefings. A rich resource for active instructors, these lesson plans are also helpful to CFI applicants preparing their own materials. This fourth edition incorporates critical information previously published in Train Like You Fly: A Flight Instructor’s Guide to Scenario-Based Training, current best practices, and tried and true advice for teaching both visual and instrument flight.
This book is designed to work in complement with any syllabus and the FAA Test Standards. It explains how to teach each maneuver, making the flight instructor’s favorite syllabus even more effective and enjoyable for clients. Each maneuver briefing features a series of drawings instructors can discuss with their clients or replicate in the classroom and an accompanying script to teach from, which includes a story or motivation on why and how the maneuver is applied in actual flight. Common errors are discussed in the form of keys to success to positively inspire clients to become sound aviation citizens.
In addition to lesson plans, this book includes templates, checklists, and assignments to build proper flight preparation habits and help determine a student pilot’s readiness to act as pilot-in-command. These tools are especially helpful to the applicant preparing for their initial CFI checkride, as well as active CFIs preparing students for major flight training milestones, such as first solo, solo cross-country, and their checkride.
The Flight Instructor’s Manual is an invaluable reference for flight instructor applicants and serves as an indispensable guide for both new and experienced instructors (CFIs). The Fifth Edition is edited by William K. Kershner's son, William C. Kershner. This manual is organized so that each chapter serves as a stand-alone reference for a particular phase of instruction, allowing each to be used as “how to instruct” guides on topics such as fundamentals of flight instruction (FOI), presolo instruction, first solo to the private certificate, advanced VFR instruction, introduction to aerobatic instruction, and instrument instruction. The book also features a comprehensive spin syllabus, material on multi-engine airplanes, instructing international students, teaching ground school, and setting up tests.
Teaching tips and common student errors provided for:
Fundamentals of Flight Instruction (FOI)
Presolo
First Solo to the Private Certificate
Complex Single-Engine Airplanes
Light Twins
Spins
Aerobatics
Instruments
With over six decades of experience as pilot-in-command in more than 100 types and models of airplanes, Bill Kershner was FAA/General Aviation Flight Instructor of the Year in 1992, and named Elder Statesman of Aviation in 1997. He was inducted into the Flight Instructor Hall of Fame in 1998. His son, William C. Kershner, was soloed by his father, and holds Flight Instructor and Airline Transport Pilot certificates. He has flown 22 types of airplanes in his over 10,000 hours of flight time, ranging from Cessna 150s to Boeing 777s.
All pilots, whether they fly for pleasure, business, or as a career, must complete a flight review every 2 years (sometimes called a Biennial Flight Review or BFR). Guide to the Flight Review delivers valuable information in a question and answer format, providing an excellent study and preparation tool for students, pilots, and instructors alike. Flight instructors and FAA authorized flight review administrators will find this guide to be extremely helpful in developing a well-rounded flight review tailored to the applicants' needs. Applicants will learn what to expect in their upcoming flight review, refresh their knowledge, and renew their confidence, all of which will ensure safe practices while in flight.
This eighth edition includes current FAA guidance on flight reviews including AC 61-98B and AC 61-91J Wings Pilot Proficiency Program. Other additions include new information on special flight permits, ADs, EFBs, airport markings and signs, runway incursion avoidance, risk management, and an updated checklist to reflect the current PTS.
The FAA offers different options for completing the Flight Review, and this book covers all of these in detail. International pilots can also use this book to help familiarize themselves with flight operations in the United States.
This book is an effective tool for both the applicant and the flight instructor and has separate sections for each. The Eighth Edition has been updated to reflect current rules and procedures and includes:
Information for Pilots wanting to fly without a medical certificate using Basic Med.
Information pertinent to today’s operational environment and areas of emphasis such as human factors, risk management, FAA certification standards, loss-of-control, and upset recovery, ADS-B, Remote pilots and drones.
The FAA’s “Conducting an Effective Flight Review” guidance document provides specific recommendations for the ground review, flight activities, post-flight debriefing, and pilot improvement plans.
The FAA’s online flight review course is referenced throughout, encouraging both applicants and instructors to take advantage of this excellent (and free) resource.
Questions-and-answer format for the ground review portion of the flight review is an excellent refresher for the information all pilots need to know.
Sample written quiz, which can be used to meet the ground training requirement.
For instructors, helpful recommendations on how to conduct the flight review, with a synopsis of practical test standards for the maneuvers at both the Private and Commercial level.
Appendix has reprints of the flight review regulation (14 CFR 61.56) and other helpful and important FAA resources, including a comprehensive checklist that helps both applicants and instructors ensure they not only meet legal standards but gain useful insight in following through with the flight review requirement.
The flight review must include 1 hour of ground instruction as well as 1 hour of flight instruction. The information provided in this book may be used by instructors to fulfill these requirements.
Complete preparation for issuing or taking a flight review, including both the ground and flight requirements. This book answers the most commonly asked questions about the flight review.
