Navigation flight

Fascinating sport, exciting competitions, top flying performance ... all this and much more is navigation flying. Here you can find out more about this interesting branch of general aviation.

What is navigation flight?

Navigation flying is a branch of general aviation in which the aim is to fly as precisely as possible - without a tablet or navigation device. It is usually flown in teams of two: a pilot and a navigator. You can take off in motorised gliders, microlights and single-engine small aircraft.

Before a flight can take off, the route must first be planned and mapped out. This is done with the help of classic navigation aids on paper maps at a scale of 1:200,000, and there is also little electronic equipment involved in the flight. For terrestrial navigation, the crew relies on their flight planning, their eyesight and the classic tools of flying.

During a scored flight, certain tasks must then be completed. These can be to fly over certain turning points at the exact time, to find pictures or ground markings in the landscape or to land as accurately as possible on a specified point.

The navigation flight offers the opportunity to experience exciting flights in a great community and to improve your own flying skills as part of a team.
