ICAO Language Proficiency Test

With the ICAO Language Proficiency Test pilots demonstrate their sufficient knowledge and skills in the English language.

Taking the language proficiency test proves that you can express yourself precisely and clearly in the foreign language, speak freely about unexpected topics and understand your counterpart.

Your advantages of an examination at Eisenschmidt:

  • The test is recognized by all aviation authorities in the EASA area.
  • The test takes place completely online.

  • Duration: only 1 hour

  • Individual appointment.
  • Our examiners are experienced commercial pilots and/or flight instructors.

  • We only test your language skills - no technical questions.

What exam levels do we offer?

  • Minimum required level
  • Recommended for pilots with basic language skills
  • Valid: 4 years

Your language skills will be assessed according to the "ICAO Holistic Description". The following requirements must be met.

Pronunciation: It is influenced by the native language, but only sometimes affects intelligibility.

Structure: You have mastered basic grammatical structures and sentences. Errors may occur, but rarely affect meaning.

Vocabulary: Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate on general and aviation-related topics. You can often paraphrase when vocabulary is lacking.

Fluency: Occasionally, there is a loss of fluency between practiced speech and spontaneous interaction. Filler words are not disruptive.

Comprehension: Your comprehension is mostly correct. When confronted with an unexpected topic or situation, comprehension may be slower or require clarification.

Interaction: Your responses are usually immediate, appropriate, and informative, keeping the conversation going. If there is a misunderstanding, you can ask for clarification or confirmation.

  • Pilots with a good command of the English language
  • Must-have for professional pilots
  • Valid: 6 years

(Almost) everyone who regularly uses English, has just graduated from high school or regularly reads/listens to English is ready for the EXTENDED level.

Your language skills will be assessed according to the "ICAO Holistic Descriptors". The following requirements are set.

Pronunciation: Your pronunciation is influenced by your native language, but almost never affects intelligibility.

Structure: You have a consistently good command of basic grammar and basic sentence patterns. Complex structures are attempted, but with errors that sometimes interfere with meaning.

Vocabulary: Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate on familiar and unfamiliar topics. You often know synonyms for the words you use and occasionally use idioms.

Fluency: You can converse at length about familiar topics with relative ease.

Comprehension: Your comprehension is accurate on general and work-related topics and mostly accurate on language complications.

Interaction: Your responses are direct, appropriate, and informative.

  • Highest achievable level
  • Not only for native speakers
  • Valid: indefinitely

Level 6 is often referred to as the "native" level. However, this is not correct. ICAO has named level 6 "EXPERT " because it is possible to reach level 6 without being a native speaker.

Level 6 is also completely independent of your previous flying experience. It depends only on your language skills.

Your language skills are evaluated according to the "ICAO Holistic Description". The following requirements are set.

Pronunciation: Can be affected by dialect, but almost never affects intelligibility.

Structure: You can use not only simple but also complex grammar and use it correctly throughout.

Vocabulary: Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate on familiar and unfamiliar topics. You know synonyms for the words you use and know when and how to use idioms.

Fluency: You are able to speak at length with natural and effortless fluency. When you need to emphasize something, you know when to vary the flow of speech.

Comprehension: You are able to understand a wide range of linguistic and cultural nuances.

Interaction: You are able to interact effortlessly in almost all situations. You respond appropriately to verbal and nonverbal cues.

Which level is right for me?

In order to conduct radiotelephone communications in English, language proficiency must be obtained in addition to a radiotelephone certificate. Without the language proficiency certificate, the English radiotelephone certificate cannot be used. A minimum of Level 4 is required for this.

Airline pilots (or CPL/ATPL student pilots) should have at least Level 5.

However, Level 5 tests offer less added value. For both commercial and private pilots, there are great advantages to Level 6, which puts you in a very good position both in job applications and within the pilot community. And the most important advantage: it saves money. This is because Level 6 is valid for life, which means that the test only has to be taken once.

For this reason, we recommend taking the Level 6 test directly. If you do not pass the test, but your knowledge is sufficient for Level 5, you will receive a Level 5 certificate.

We will also be happy to advise you on the choice of the appropriate examination level.

How does an exam work?

All tests take place in a relaxed atmosphere and in a friendly manner! This is very important to us!

The test procedure and test sequence is always the same, no matter if you take a level 4 or level 6 test. Only the difficulty of the tests varies.

Introduction

At the beginning the examiner explains the test procedure in detail, answers all remaining questions and checks the personal data given by the examinee.

CBT - Computer Based Training

After the briefing, the actual test begins with computer-based questions. Depending on the level, 12 to 18 questions have to be answered, which are pre-recorded and read out by the computer. All these questions have to be answered orally and in simple language.

Missed part of a question or didn't quite understand it and want to hear it again? Don't worry, there is a "SAY AGAIN" button. The entire question will then be read back to you.

Interview (duration: 15 minutes)

After that, there will be a 15-minute interview. The interview is conducted by the examiner, who is always a pilot.

First you will be asked to introduce yourself, tell the examiner about your flying experience and answer a few more questions about aviation. Then you will be shown some pictures and asked to describe the picture. The entire context of the interview will be aviation related.
